Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR)

Automatic Licenses plate recognition (ALPR)

is a mass surveillance method that uses optical character recognition on images to read the license plates on vehicles. All of our systems can scanALPR_1

number plates at around one per second on cars travelling up to 100 mph (160 km/h). The Licenses Plate Recognition Systems are all compatible with Arabic and English Character sets, and are currently in use in the GCC Countries.

The system can use either road-rule enforcement cameras, or ones in mobile vehicles. They are used by various police forces to identify wanted or stolen vehicles, and monitoring traffic activity such as red light adherence in an intersection. ALPR can be used to store the images captured by the cameras as well as the text from the license plate, with some configurable to store a photograph of the driver. Systems commonly use infrared lighting to allow the camera to take the picture at any time of day. A powerful flash is included in at least one version of the intersection-monitoring cameras, serving to both illuminate the picture and make the offender aware of his or her mistake. ALPR technology tends to be region specific, owing to plate variation from place to place.

ALPR_3The Infrared License Plate Systems and processors have been utilized for a wide range of security solutions from portable to vehicle mounted mobile to fixed installations. In each instance, the basic principle is the ability to capture vehicle number plate data and immediately verify against known lists – either approved or wanted – to ensure the vehicle in question is authorized and not suspect or wanted.

Standard features of our ALPR systems applied within the security sector include:

  • System operation with or without human intervention.ALPR_3
  • An open architecture for integration with a variety of 3rd party applications.
  • Immediate feedback on number plate hits against known vehicle lists.
  • Easily interfaced to Variable Message Signs and various physical control barriers.
  • A non-intrusive method of monitoring every vehicle, the location of the vehicle within the facility and the automated notification when a vehicle has entered a restricted zone or area.
  • A variety of methods for data transmission including modem, LAN, WAN and the internet.
  • Ability to monitor vehicle travel patterns over time to detect suspicious behavior or verify the presence of suspect vehicles.
  • The ability to control access by verifying the number plate against an authorized list.

Main Applications include:

  • Fixed – Permanent Installation such as a force control room, police station operations room or a commercial 3rd party partnership CCTV installation. Mobile ALPR – In-car solution to capture number plates and compare to databases to produce a HIT.
  • Fully Portable – A self contained system which is able to be moved easily from vehicle to vehicle.
